LEAP
(LSU Law Early Admission Program)
The LSU Honors College, in conjunction with the LSU Law Center, sponsors a valuable program for undergraduates interested in pursuing a law degree after graduation from LSU. The program, entitled LEAP (LSU Law Early Admission Program), is designed to provide undergraduates with information about law school and about careers in the legal profession, as well as to help them prepare for law school during their undergraduate years.
Students in the LEAP program will be invited to attend lectures and other events at the Law Center. In the past, Law Center guest lecturers have included Supreme Court Justices and other distinguished judges as well as prominent law professors and attorneys from both the United States and abroad.
ABOUT THE PROGRAM
Beginning in their first semester, students in the
LEAP program will attend information sessions hosted by Law Center professors
and alumni who will discuss both the law school experience and possible careers
in the law. During the spring semester of their sophomore year, those who have
participated in the LEAP program during their first two years in the
Honors College, as well as other interested sophomores, will be invited to apply
for admission to the upper division part of the program.
In their junior and senior years, students in the LEAP program will take Honors College classes designed especially for them and taught by LSU Law Center faculty. One current course, for example, is "The Constitution and American Civilization" taught by Paul R. Baier, the George M. Armstrong, Jr. Professor of Law. The Law Center will also provide information sessions regarding possible employment opportunities for undergraduates in various areas of the legal profession. Career counseling sessions will inform students about various career possibilities after graduation from law school.
ELIGIBILITY
Any Honors College student interested in pursuing a law degree is
eligible to participate in the LEAP program during their first two years.
However, participation in the upper division part of the program is highly
selective.
EARLY ADMISSION
Students who are accepted into the upper division LEAP program
will be granted conditional early admission to the LSU Law Center. That
acceptance
will be confirmed if the student achieves a GPA and LSAT score at or above
the median from the previous entering Law Center class, graduating with College
Honors (as determined by the Honors College), and meets the Law Center's
standard of character and moral fitness for admission.
All applicants who have graduated from the LEAP program will automatically be considered for a Faculty Honors Scholarship, granted by the Law Center to students who have excelled academically during their undergraduate years.
