South African Art: Culture, Apartheid, and Social Change
Assistant Professor Allison Young School of Art
This course provides an in-depth look at art, literature, history, and visual culture in South Africa in the 20th and 21st centuries. Apartheid, Afrikaans for “separateness,” was an oppressive system of legalized segregation and racial discrimination that impacted everyday life in South Africa most directly from 1948 to 1994. Since its inception, artists, filmmakers, writers, and musicians dedicated their practices to raising international awareness and challenging the pernicious ideologies that sustained the apartheid system. Today’s creatives continue to respond to social issues, as well as new artistic innovations and evolving conceptions of global identity.
