Matters of crime and punishment are deeply entrenched in US culture and national identity. This course explores the cultural dimensions of crime and incarceration in the United States by understanding public discourse on these matters through the critical analysis of popular culture. We will pay special attention to historical and contemporary expressions of race, class, gender, sexuality, national identity, etc. in and around the carceral state.
