Hollis Watkins, a life-long human rights activist, will discuss his experience working to register African-American voters in segregated Mississippi during the summer of 1964. Mr. Watkins was one of the first students recruited by Civil Rights legend Bob Moses when he arrived in Mississippi in 1961. Mr. Watkins was first incarcerated in 1961 for leading a sit-in against a segregated library in McComb, Mississippi. Mr. Watkins also figures prominently in Bruce Watson's book Freedom Summer, the Honors College's Shared Read for 2011.
