December 17, 2014, was a day of celebration on both sides of the Florida Straits; President Barack Obama and Cuban President Raul Castro announced plans to reestablish diplomatic relations between Cuba and the US after more than 50 years of impasse. In this talk, Henry Heredia, Director of International Programs at the Juan Marinello Cuban Institute for Cultural Research in Havana, Cuba, will discuss Cubans' reactions to the December 17th announcement, from optimism to resignation, and how changes US foreign policy can and will affect Cubans' everyday lives.

Mr. Heredia will also discuss current opportunities for academic exchange and research in Cuban culture, including our Honors in Cuba summer study abroad program, which is hosted by the Juan Marinello Institute.
