Honors Shared Reading Book
Mike Tidwell's Bayou Farewell: The Rich Life and Tragic Death of Louisiana's Cajun Coast
This year the Honors College is inaugurating a Shared Reading Program for all students in the Honors College. For our inaugural year, we have chosen Bayou Farewell, and we have invited author Mike Tidwell to address all Honors College students at the Honors College Convocation on Wednesday, August 26 at 7 PM in the Union Cotillion Ballroom. First-year Honors College students will use Bayou Farewell in Honors 2000, and the book will be a central focus of fall programming in the Laville Honors House.
The intent of the Honors Shared Reading is to give new Honors students a common experience and to introduce them to the culture of the Honors College, which emphasizes LSU's "Commitment to Community" and the College's commitment to fostering scholars who will strive to solve our state's and nation's most serious problems. Returning Honors College students and LSU faculty and staff are also invited to read the book.
Bayou Farewell is the story of Tidwell's journey into Cajun Louisiana, where he discovers that "The whole ragged sole of Louisiana's boot, an area the size of Connecticut--three million acres--is literally washing out to sea, surrendering to the Gulf of Mexico. It's an unfolding calamity of fantastic magnitude, taking with it entire Cajun towns and an age-old way of life." Tidwell exposes an environmental disaster that is washing away 25 miles of Louisiana's coastal wetlands every year.
This event is sponsored by the Honors College and the School of Energy, Coast & Environment.
