Helen Thorpe, author of Soldier Girls, will give the address at the 2016 Ogden Honors College Convocation. All Ogden students are encouraged to attend, and the event is also open to the general public.
Soldier Girls is the 2016 Ogden Honors College Shared Read book. Published in 2015, Soldier Girls is a non-fictional account of a three women who joined the Indiana National Guard and ended up serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. Thorpe follows the women through deployment and then back home to Indiana and civilian life; none of the women expected to serve in a combat zone, yet they are drawn into lengthy deployments that change their lives. Soldier Girls was chosen in part as the 2016 Shared Read for its relevance to the curriculum of HNRS 2000: Why War?, an Ogden Honors College course that uses the history and experience of warfare as a lens to examine social responsibility and teach critical analysis skills.
Author Helen Thorpe received her bachelor's degree from Princeton University and her master's degree from Columbia University. She has written for The New York Times Magazine, The New Yorker, Slate, and Harper's Bazaar. Her stories have also aired on This American Life and Soundprint. Her first book, Just Like Us: The True Story of Four Mexican Girls Coming of Age in America, was published in 2009. Soldier Girls was named the number one nonfiction book of 2015 by Time Magazine.
The Ogden Honors College is committed to fostering scholars who will strive to solve public problems and become leaders in the larger world. The Shared Read program is one of the ways in which Ogden students begin to engage with and ask questions about these issues, and is designed to introduce new students to the academic and intellectual culture of the Honors College through a common reading experience. Each spring, the Ogden Honors College selects a single text as required summer reading for all incoming students and as recommended reading for current Honors students. Our academic year is then kicked off in the fall by Honors Convocation, at which the author of the Shared Read text gives the address.
Incoming Ogden students are required to read Soldier Girls by August 22. Students can purchase the book at the Barnes and Noble on LSU’s campus, or at their local bookstore.
A book signing will follow Thorpe's address.
