Mr. Marsalis will perform songs from his jazz repertoire accompanied by LSU jazz faculty members at this October 23, 2016 Union Theater concert.
Growing up in New Orleans as the oldest son of pianist and educator Ellis Marsalis, Branford was drawn to music with siblings Wynton, Delfeayo and Jason. Starting with the clarinet, Branford moved ultimately to the tenor and soprano saxophones. In 1986, he formed the Branford Marsalis Quartet, which is recognized as the standard to which other ensembles of its kind is measured. The quartet’s recording, Four MFs Playin’ Tunes, was named Best Instrumental Jazz Album in 2012 by iTunes.
In addition to performing with a jazz giants including Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Herbie Hancock and Sonny Rollins, Branford Marsalis has excelled in duets with several major pianists, including Harry Connick, Jr. and Joey Calderazzo. Mr. Marsalis has also toured with Sting, collaborated with the Grateful Dead and Bruce Hornsby, served as Musical Director of The Tonight Show Starring Jay Leno and hosted National Public Radio’s widely syndicated Jazz Set. The world-class quality of his performances coupled with his achievement of three Grammys and a citation as a Jazz Master by the National Endowment for the Arts have established Branford as a major player in the worlds of jazz and classical music.
