Stanley Lombardo, translator of the version of the Iliad currently being used in class by HNRS 2000 students, will give a talk and a performance of Greek poetry to Honors students. This event is free and open to the LSU community.
Dr. Lombardo is a native of New Orleans. He received a B.A. from Loyola University in New Orleans, an M.A. from Tulane University, and a Ph.D. from the University of Texas in 1976. He served as Chair of the Classics Department at the University of Kansas for fifteen years, and taught Greek and Latin at all levels, as well as courses on the culture and literature of ancient Greece. In 2004, he was appointed head of the University of Kansas Honors Program. His "vernacular" 1997 translation of The Iliad was met with widespread acclaim, and he has published a number of other translations, including of the Odyssey and the Aeneid.
