This two-part talk will first define and describe rural diversity of places and people in Louisiana.  The second part will examine key socio-demographic trends and challenges.  Professor Schafer has been on faculty in the LSU Department of Sociology since 1999, and has had a split appointment with the Department of Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness, and the LSU Agricultural Center, since 2002. His research work tries to understand some of the demographic and social changes in Louisiana after the 2005 hurricanes as well as examining the high school dropout and a range of other educational outcomes in the United States and Louisiana.
