Why Honors?
The Honors College curriculum is designed to provide talented and motivated
students with more interesting courses suited to your academic skills. Honors
courses are smaller than regular classes, and you will have closer contact
with faculty. As a group, you will have opportunities to meet regularly with
faculty and administrators, get to know them, and have easy access if you
need academic advice. The program is designed to make your educational experience
richer, not just tougher.
What courses will I take, and will they add extra units to my
load?
Each school year, Honors students take honors courses. The courses will fulfill
General Education requirements and will substitute for regular GE classes.
In some cases, classes may fulfill requirements within your major. In no case
will the honors courses add extra units to your overall load.
How can I get more information about the Honors Program?
Feel free to email us at honors@lsu.edu
or call us at 225/578-8831. Also, refer to the Contact section of this Web
site.
What qualifications do I need to join the Honors College?
Qualifications for the Honors Program depend on whether you're an incoming
freshman, a mid-year applicant, or a transfer student. Please see
Admissions
pages for more information. Admission is highly competitive.
Is there a separate application for the Honors
College?
No, the Application for Undergraduate Admission can be additionally used for
admission to the Honors College. Simply complete the application and
indicate your interest in applying to the Honors College.
I’ve already applied for admission to the
university, but I did not apply for admission to the Honors College. How do
I change my application?
Students who have already completed the Application for Undergraduate
Admission, but did not indicate the option for Honors College admission
consideration, may amend their applications by contacting the Office of
Undergraduate Admissions, 225/578-1175.
Where do I send my transcripts and ACT/SAT
scores?
All application materials should be submitted to the Office of Undergraduate
Admissions along with the Application for Undergraduate Admission.
Standardized exam scores must come directly from ACT or College Board to be
considered “official.”
I’ve been accepted to the university, but when
will I be notified about Honors College admission?
The Honors College admission decision is made separately from and after
the university's admission decision. Honors College applications will be
reviewed after the November 15 application deadline, and students will be
notified of their admission status beginning in mid-December.
Where do I send my essay for my application?
There is no extra essay or writing sample that students must submit. The
essay completed as part of the writing component of the SAT or ACT will be
used in Honors College admission consideration.
Can I apply for admission to the Honors College
after the November 15 application deadline?
We encourage all students to submit a complete application to the Office of
Undergraduate Admission before our November 15 application deadline,
including high school transcripts and standardized exam scores. Any
applications received after November 15 will be reviewed on a
space-available basis.
Can I send letters of recommendation and resumes
with my application?
While they are not required as part of the application process, letters
of recommendation and resumes are accepted and are reviewed as needed.
Must I live in Laville/Acadian Honors House?
While not required, all Honors students are strongly encouraged to live in the Laville Honors
House their freshman year. You will live together as a group, meeting other
talented students from all colleges on campus. As a group, you will have the
opportunity to join special programs for Honors students and will benefit
from peer contact.
Does applying
to the Honors College make me eligible to live in Laville/Acadian Honors
House?
All applicants who wish to live on campus must complete the Department of
Residential Life's housing application on their website (www.lsu.edu/housing).
This application may be submitted anytime after completing LSU's
Application for Undergraduate Admission.
If I am accepted into the Honors College, am I
guaranteed space in the Laville/Acadian Honors House?
Applicants who are accepted into the Honors College and apply for campus
housing (indicating preference for Honors House) by March 8 will receive
priority assignment to Laville/Acadian Honors House.
Where do I
send my college/university transcripts?
Official transcripts from previous institutions MUST first
be sent to the university's Office of Undergraduate Admission.
Additional copies of transcripts may also be sent to the Honors College.
My
final transcript will not be available before the Honors College application
deadline. Can I still apply?
The Transfer and Continuing Students' Application must be submitted by the
given deadline. However, transcripts should be forwarded to the
university as soon after completion of the last term at the current
