2014 Honors College Shared Read
The LSU Honors College Summer Shared Read program has selected Thank You for Your Service, by David Finkel, as its 2014 book.
Thank You for Your Service is a nonfiction account of how US veterans work and struggle to readjust to civilian life after deployment. Finkel “embeds” with the US Army’s Second Batallion, 16th Infantry Regiment as its members return home from long deployments in Baghdad. The author observes soldiers and their families as they mourn, rebuild relationships, and encounter new challenges—everything from unemployment, to depression.
The Shared Read program is designed to introduce new students to the academic and intellectual culture of the LSU Honors College through a common reading experience. Each spring, the Honors College selects a single text as required summer reading for all incoming students and as recommended reading for current Honors students. Our academic year is then kicked off in the fall by Honors Convocation, at which the author of the Shared Read text gives the address.
Incoming Honors students are required to read Thank You for Your Service by August 22. Students can purchase the book at the Barnes and Noble on LSU’s campus, or at their local bookstore.
