Art Serving Art 2011
FOCUS, an Honors College arts and education non-profit organization, recently hosted its annual spring fundraiser, Art Serving Art, at the Shaw Center for the Arts River Terrace.
Art Serving Art is an art sale that showcases the work donated by FOCUS alumni, LSU students, and local artists.
All proceeds from Art Serving Art go directly to Focusing on College and Unlimited Success (FOCUS), an LSU student organization that strives to make a difference in the lives of students from under-resourced Baton Rouge-area high schools.
Through FOCUS, high-achieving students from under-resourced high schools in Baton Rouge spend two weeks at LSU over the summer. During the FOCUS program, students attend seminars in art, creative writing, philosophy, science, theater, music, and dance. They also visit the senior colleges on campus and live in the residence halls so that they can get a feel for college life and understand the opportunities of higher education.
“It went really well,” said Marie Perret, Director of Special Projects who organized the event. “Obviously, I’m biased, but as far as turnout goes, and the amount of art we had to sell, I was really pleased.”
Students accepted into FOCUS receive a scholarship that covers all expenses of the program. The program is sponsored by Special Children's Foundation and Shell.
Art Serving Art featured several different kinds of art, including jewelry, painting, photography, drawing, sculpture, and crafts.
