LSU Roger Hadfield Ogden Honors College Chooses ‘Another Day in the Death of America’ for Summer Shared Read
Shared Read 2018

Gary Younge, author of "Another Day in the Death of America"

The LSU Roger Hadfield Ogden Honors College has selected Gary Younge’s Another Day in the Death of America: A Chronicle of Ten Short Lives as the Summer Shared Read for the 2018-2019 academic year.

Released in 2016, Another Day in the Death of America is a nonfiction account detailing the lives of ten children and teens ranging from ages nine to nineteen who were killed by guns. Younge captures the impact of these gun-deaths by restricting his narrative to a single day in November of 2013. A winner of the 2017 J. Anthony Lukas Prize, shortlisted for the 2017 Hurston/Wright Foundation Award, a finalist for the 2017 Helen Bernstein Book Award for Excellence in Journalism and longlisted for the 2017 Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Non Fiction, Another Day in the Death of America seeks to humanize the conversation surrounding the gun-violence epidemic in America.

Younge, editor-at-large for The Guardian, is a British journalist and author. His other works include No Place Like Home: A Black Briton’s Journey Through the American South (2002), Stranger in a Strange Land: Encounters in the Disunited States (2006), Who Are We – And Should it Matter in the 21st Century? (2011) and The Speech: The Story Behind Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s Dream (2013).

“We strive to have both the Shared Read and our ‘Critical Thinking’ seminar be tied to difficult issues where there are no easy solutions,” said LSU Ogden Honors College Dean Jonathan Earle.  “This book and Mr. Younge’s excellent work in journalism definitely fall into that category. I look forward to the conversations in August.”

The Ogden Honors College Shared Read Program introduces new students to the academic and intellectual culture of the Honors College through a common reading experience. Each spring, the Ogden Honors College selects a single text as required summer reading for all incoming students and as recommended reading for current Honors students, faculty and staff. The academic year then opens in the fall semester with the Honors Convocation, at which the author of the Shared Read text gives an address.

All incoming Honors College students are required to read Another Day in the Death of America by August 20, 2018. Students can purchase the book at the Barnes and Noble on LSU’s campus at a discounted rate, or at their local bookstore.
