The course is designed to focus on the question of the interrelation between philosophy and art. In effect, we will be looking for philosophers in the history of art and artists in the history of philosophy. The artistic works at issue will range from Greek sculpture and architecture, through Medieval manuscripts, to Renaissance painting as well as 19th century music and 20th century abstract art, not to mention film and video. The philosophical works will sample the history of western thought, including selections from Plato, Anselm, Descartes, Hegel, Nietzsche, and Heidegger, as well as writings by artists.
