Performing Dickens: Stage, Screen, and New Media
Alumni Professor Sharon Aronofsky Weltman Department of English
This course examines several works of Charles Dickens (such as Oliver Twist, A Christmas Carol, Little Dorrit, and Great Expectations) along with a range of important film, television, and dramatic adaptations from 1837 to 2018.
Dickens wrote while acting his characters in front of a mirror, laughing out loud along the way. All his novels appeared on the stage, often even before they finished their serialized publication. He is made to be performed.
For new media, students will bring in web series, video games, or create adaptations of their own.
Requirements include discussion, papers, exams, and presentations.
The course is offered by Alumni Professor Sharon Weltman. She is widely published and has won many awards for teaching and research.
