We will read eight African-American writers who have contributed to the canon of American Drama over the past 60 years: Lorraine Hansberry, Alice Childress, Adrienne Kennedy, Amiri Baraka, Ed Bullins, August Wilson, Suzan-Lori Parks, and Dael Orlandersmith. Special attention will be given to how these writers respond to the Civil Rights and Black Power Movements in the 60’s and 70’s, as well as to the oppressions of Jim Crow in the South and racial and economic segregation in the North. Attention will also be given to how these writers respond to what Bullins calls the “So-Called Western Avant-Garde Drama” and to the search for specific forms of Black identity, masculinity and femininity.
