This course is an introduction to contemporary global cinema covering the films of internationally recognized filmmakers from a diverse range of countries. We will examine the aesthetic, cultural, and political aspects of the films; their cinematic techniques and major genres; their distinctive national cinemas; and the composition of their film audiences. We will particularly focus on the different images of the body represented in contemporary global cinema. Main topics are gendered bodies, digital bodies, body and trauma, etc. The course’s theoretical framework includes readings by Michel Foucault and Judith Butler, among others.
