"Transgender" has recently become a household word, but the genealogy of transgender discourses extends across decades. These discourses, or sets of conventions for communicating about "trans," implicate patterns of social organization with life and death consequences—not only for a minority group interpellated by "trans" but also universally insofar as all individuals are disciplined by norms for the alignment of sexed embodiment, gender assignment, gender identity, gender expression, and sexual desire. This course will survey religious, medical, gay, feminist, queer, biological, legal, cinematic, televisual, and digital transgender discourses.
