The Burden Woods, located at the Burden Museum and Gardens on Essen Lane in Baton Rouge, provides trails and outdoor learning experiences for school groups and adults seeking leisurely walks and hiking in the heart of Baton Rouge. The mature forest canopy of this urban woods was severely damaged by Hurricane Gustav but is being restored by volunteers who care for the newly planted trees in the forest.

The Honors College Student Council has planned a day of service at the Burden Woods. This service opportunity is open to all interested Honors College students. Volunteers will contribute to trail maintenance and gardening projects that will aid the reforestation effort. Activities will include placing mulch around newly planted young trees to promote their growth and the removal of invasive vines and brush around mature trees.

Each volunteer should bring a pair of gloves, and any participants who own safety goggles are encouraged to bring those as well.
