2019 Sternberg Lecture

Sternberg Professor Belinda Davis to Give Lecture on Immigration and the Social Safety Net

Baton Rouge, La.-- The Roger Hadfield Ogden Honors College has selected Dr. Belinda Davis, Associate Professor in Political Science at LSU, for the Erich and Lea Sternberg Honors Professorship.

The professorship was established in 1996 by long-time Honors College supporter, Lea Sternberg, in honor of her late husband Erich, and remains the most prestigious honors that the Ogden Honors College has to confer to faculty members.

Recipients of the professorship are required to have outstanding academic credentials and qualifications; an excellent teaching record; impeccable moral and ethical character; and to promote trustworthiness, leadership, patriotism, and racial and religious tolerance. In addition, the Sternberg Professor participates in teaching and the general life of the Ogden Honors College during the tenure of the award.

“Dr. Davis’ path-breaking scholarship and teaching on topics like poverty, education, welfare, and health care have long benefited Ogden Honors Students,” said Ogden Honors College Dean Jonathan Earle. “I cannot think of a better person to hold the College’s premiere professorship.”

Davis specializes in Public Policy with her work at LSU. She’s currently working on research projects regarding welfare migration, electoral competition, and Medicaid implementation.

As the recipient of the award, Davis will give the 2019 Sternberg Lecture on “Immigration and the Social Safety Net.” The lecture will discuss recent increases in immigration and the diffusion of immigrants beyond “gateway” states have changed the demographic landscape of the country. Davis will question how these changes and attitudes toward immigration influenced public support for the social safety net.

“Using contemporary and historical data, we will explore how economic threat, party politics, and immigration attitudes work together to undermine support for America’s welfare programs,” Davis said.

The 2019 Sternberg Lecture will take place in the French House’s Hans and Donna Sternberg Salon, on April 25 at 4:30 p.m.
