2011 Summer Shared Read:Freedom Summer

Bruce Watson's Freedom Summer Selected for the Shared Read Program; Watson to Address Honors Students at Honors Convocation

Bruce Watson’s Freedom Summer: The Savage Season That Made Mississippi Burn and Made America a Democracy has been chosen as the Honors College 2011 Summer Shared Read. Watson will address the Honors community at Honors Convocation on August 24th.

Watson’s latest book, Freedom Summer revisits the pivotal civil rights struggle that occurred during the summer of 1964, when about 700 volunteers fighting for equality were harassed and persecuted by forces both public and private.

Filled with gripping personal stories and tales of incredible courage in the face of extreme violence, the narrative is not only a historical account — it is a testament to the power of idealism and the human spirit.

Designed to introduce new students to the academic and intellectual environment of the Honors College, the Honors College Shared Reading program gives incoming students the opportunity to meet faculty members and interact with other freshmen.

Before they arrive on campus in August, all incoming Honors students will be required to read Freedom Summer, which will be available in the LSU Bookstore during Spring Invitational (March 30 — April 1).  In the fall, they will have the opportunity to hear the author address the LSU community during the annual Honors College Convocation.
