2015 Ogden Honors College Shared Read Announced

Novel by LSU alumnus selected as text

fives and twenty fives coverThe LSU Roger Hadfield Ogden Honors College has selected the novel Fives and Twenty-Fives by LSU alum Michael Pitre as its 2015 Summer Shared Read text. This is the first work of fiction, and the first text authored by an alumnus of LSU, to be featured by the Shared Read program.

“I’m delighted to have such a talented author—and LSU alumnus—participate in our Shared Read program,” said Ogden Honors College Dean Jonathan Earle. “The novel's subject matter couldn’t be more in synch with our curriculum, and I think Michael Pitre’s characters will stay with our students for a long, long time.”

Published in 2014, Fives and Twenty-Fives is a fictional account of a Marine Corps road repair platoon whose mission is to clear Iraqi highways of roadside bombs and the potholes in which they are hidden. The novel follows the platoon’s Lieutenant, medic, and Iraqi interpreter as they look back on their experiences during the war and attempt to navigate post-war lives back home in New Orleans. Fives and Twenty-Fives was chosen in part as the 2015 Shared Read for its relevance to the curriculum of HNRS 2000: Why War?, an Ogden Honors College course that uses the history of warfare as a lens to examine social responsibility and teach critical analysis skills.

Author Michael Pitre is a graduate of LSU, where he double-majored in history and creative writing. He planned to become a teacher after graduation, but the events of September 11, 2001 led him to join the Marine Corps, where he served two tours in Iraq and attained the rank of Captain. He left the service in 2010 and subsequently obtained an MBA from Loyola. He currently resides in New Orleans; this is his first novel. Mr. Pitre will give the address at Honors Convocation in September 2015.

The Ogden Honors College Shared Read Program is designed to introduce new students to the academic and intellectual culture of the Honors College through a common reading experience. Each spring, the Ogden Honors College selects a single text as required summer reading for all incoming students and as recommended reading for current Honors students. Our academic year is then kicked off in the fall by Honors Convocation, at which the author of the Shared Read text gives the address.

Incoming Ogden students are required to read Fives and Twenty-Fives by August 22. Students can purchase the book at the Barnes and Noble on LSU’s campus, or at their local bookstore.
