Honors College Convocation kicks off the academic year with an address from Bruce Watson author of Freedom Summer. All members of the LSU community are cordially invited to attend.
Each year the Honors College selects a book for its Shared Reading Program. This year we have chosen Freedom Summer and invited author Bruce Watson to address all Honors College students at the Honors College Convocation.
The intent of the Honors Shared Read is to give new Honors students a common experience and to introduce them to the culture of the Honors College, which emphasizes LSU's Commitment to Community. Returning Honors College students and LSU faculty and staff are also invited to read the book and attend convocation.
Freedom Summer is an account of the approximately 700 college students who, under the supervision of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, spent the summer of 1964 registering black voters and opening schools in segregated Mississippi. Dwight Garner of the New York Times Book Review states, "The story of these months has been told before, but rarely this viscerally." Garner goes on to describe Watson's text as, "the literary equivalent of a hot light bulb dangling from a low ceiling."
This event is sponsored by the LSU Honors College.
