Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist David Finkel, author of Thank You for Your Service, will give the address at the 2014 LSU Honors College Convocation. All LSU Honors College students are encouraged to attend, and the event is also open to the general public.
Thank You for Your Service is the 2014 Honors College Shared Read book. The narrative focuses on an Army battalion as at it returns home to Fort Riley, Kansas after long deployment in Iraq. Finkel chronicles the beginning of the “after-war” as soldiers struggle to readjust to civilian life. Thank You for Your Service was and shortlisted for National Book Critics Circle Award for Nonfiction.
Finkel won a Pulitzer Prize for Explanatory Reporting in 2006 for a series of stories about US-funded democracy efforts in Yemen. In 2012, he won the MacArthur "Genius" Grant.
The LSU Honors College is committed to fostering scholars who will strive to solve public problems and become leaders in the larger world. The Shared Read program is one of the ways in which Honors students begin to engage with and ask questions about these issues. The program introduces incoming students to the academic and intellectual culture of the LSU Honors College through a common reading experience and through events and discussion of the selected text throughout the fall semester.
Incoming Honors students are required to read Thank You for Your Service by August 22. Students can purchase the book at the Barnes and Noble on LSU’s campus, or at their local bookstore.
A book signing will follow Finkel’s address.
